Firefighter training - Continuing education [ Firefighter 1 ]

Purpose of Certification:

Understanding and knowing the basics of firefighting procedures and hazardous materials interventions.

Who it applies to?

Anyone wishing to practice firefighting services for a population of fewer than 25,000 people or already performing such services.

This course is the minimum required certification in order to access any other training program. Effective since 2004, the Regulation respecting the conditions governing the exercise of functions within a municipal fire safety service makes provisions for certification requirements for firefighters who work for municipal fire safety services based on the size of the population being served. This course will allow you to service a population of fewer than 25,000 people. The Firefighter 1 training program will allow you to safely service your community while everyone benefits from your knowledge. In case you were wondering, a firefighter’s prior training and experience can be recognized. If a request is made and granted, you could be given an equivalency or detraction for certain sections of the Firefighter 1 training program.

This training program includes:

  • Introduction to firefighter services
  • Functioning of water-related equipment
  • Procedures in regards to different fire stages
  • Use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Use of intervention material
  • Covered ground characteristics
  • Fire prevention activities
  • Intervention procedures
  • Intervention procedures specific to two different types of fire.

This training program is presented in 3 segments

Part 1:
Course 1: Introduction firefighter services
Course 2: Functioning of water-related equipment
Course 3: Functioning of automatic pumping system

Part 2:
Course 4: Fire behaviour
Course 5: Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
Course 6: Equipment and tools
Course 7: Covered ground knowledge

Part 3:
Course 8: Prevention activities
Course 9: Intervention procedures
Course 10: Fire-specific intervention procedures

Benefits of Certification

By completing the Firefighter 1 training program; you will be able to service any population in Quebec of fewer than 25,000 persons.

Examination:

Refer to the list below for the exercises which will be covered during the examination process:

  • Putting on firefighting protective clothing;
  • Identifying various equipment parts;
  • Hose handling;
  • Using hydraulic accessories;
  • Using a lance;
  • Connecting a automatic pumping system to a water fountain;
  • Using a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA);
  • Performing tasks related to search and rescue;
  • Manual and motorized tool handling;
  • Usage of ropes;
  • Performing the installation of a portable ladder;
  • Performing ventilation activities;
  • Performing task related to protection.

Time and date of your examination period will be provided by your teacher.
